Editorial #2 (Multiple Perspectives)

It is important to have multiple viewpoints on the problem of NSA spying. In the government, people like Dick Cheney said “That intelligence capability is enormously important to the United States, to our conduct of foreign policy, um, to the defense matters, uh, to economic matters,” and that gaining intelligence on threatening activities is important for the national security of the United States (“Dick Cheney to CNN” 1). People must understand that what the government (or media) tells people is not always the truth. Having the viewpoint that intelligence gathering is helpful for national security, someone must also understand that the NSA is not only spying on some forms of threats but they are also collecting data on everyone, trying to build an archive of information on people which “is intrusive, violates privacy, and empowers untrustworthy state officials with information that is too easily abused,” (“Hit & Run Blog” 1). If someone only saw and understands what the government tells them, they would believe that NSA data recording would be the best idea for everyone, when in reality, it is actually a morally and legally wrong thing to do as it can lead to major problems like misuse that has already happened. This topic of believing beyond what a governmental body could be shown in Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi where she talked about how the Iranian people were also not told everything when the new Islamic Regime was taking over the country. The fundamentalist government killed anyone who opposed them in secrecy and chose not to talk about it, instead telling the people that all is fine and that there is nothing to fear. To fully understand the troubles of the NSA spying on people or how the Islamic Regime was hiding information from the citizens while torturing others, any person must look at it from a view beyond what the government is trying to persuade them to believe.
